Justification
As teachers, it is important for me to choose correct activities to match with the chosen theme and topic. Within these 60 minutes lesson, I chose the theme of World of stories and the story entitled ‘The Magic Tree’. It is a reading and writing focus skills and integrated with the listening and speaking skills.
I have employed a shared reading technique I choose to teach system, vocabulary and grammar covertly. Reading aloud is a fabulous experience. When reading aloud, the activity is so much more than speaking print. It will also help the pupils to reveal the qualities of sound and rhythm it possesses in the sentences and give some indication of the places to pause in a way that the eye can’t detect.
Finding the main idea, reading for details, drawing conclusion and following direction are just some of the skills included. They are also challenged to develop vocabulary, identify cause and effect and analyze character.
The Magic Tree by Jill Eggleton is quite a simple story to understand by the average pupils. It is about a magic man, who had a magic bean comes to sow it. The seed grew into a magic tree which had the jellybeans fruit.
Teacher gives a few pupils a rambutan as the set induction, to attract pupils’ attention and a step into their own inquiry. After that the pupils will read a rhyme on ‘Seed’.
The presentation stage is to be carried out for 30 minutes. During the stage, teacher reads aloud the story to practice the reading skills by reading aloud the text of story with expression. Expressive reading is a skill that pupils will remember. The pupils will read with the exactly the same expressive inflections as teacher do, which is why we should make effort to read aloud with vitality and lots of vocal variation. Teacher will also infuse the moral values by asking a question to the pupils as example; ‘What does the magic man feel when he finds out that the seed has grown?
After shared reading activity for 15 minutes, it was followed by the focus word work activities. The first 10 minutes of it will be the sound system practice on the long vowel sounds in both words; seed and man. Next is pronouncing the bold words which are in the text. Another 5 minutes is teaching grammar covertly which is stress on the singular and the plural nouns. The pupils should be able to look through the grammar items in the sentences from the shared reading text.
The practice stage will be the guided and independent reading on the next 15 minutes. The pupils are grouped and do four different activities. These four activities are to gauge the effectiveness of approaches through the lesson. Within these period, teacher will guides those who need attention in reading on the shared reading text.
For the consolidation stage, teacher distributes worksheets to the pupils. It is for reinforce on grammar. Teacher asks the pupils to write the singular and plural nouns by completing a table.
